This modest but fine 1882 Fuller organ in its acoustically-superb William Vahland-designed church can be heard next Sunday in a Keys of Gold concert featuring soloist Masahide Kurita (flute). The building is desperately in need of restoration, but you won't care about the peeling paint the moment you hear music in this space.

Today the Australian Pipe Organs team was on site, performing cleaning & maintenance in preparation - you can see some of the pipes which have been removed to facilitate this.

For context, the organ console is somewhat awkward to access as it is backed by a wall & bordered by pews, so making a shot like this required a little wriggling & squatting...

Sliders (which lie under the upperboard of a windchest) need the smallest of gaps for movement, or air will escape sideways causing "running" (sounding of adjacent notes). In older organs all components were of solid wood, whereas today seals of foam & leather are used, but their effectiveness is predicated on correct fundamentals, such as holes being round, not, as seen here, shaped like a Norman doorway... Of course components like this will be thrown away & replaced during this overhaul.

Console with music desk removed, exposing some of the Hauptwerk (upper manual) key action. The large (38-40mm) porcelain on ebony drawknobs are engraved in both German & English, though the translations are not as we might expect - for example, Hohlflöte > Hollenflute, Portunal > Claribelle et al.

The sketch of the key action is most likely from 1979, from a report made for the OHTA by John Stiller.
